How to Clean Your Mattress and Remove Odors

Maintaining the cleanliness and freshness of your mattress is essential for a good night’s sleep and overall health. A dirty mattress can harbor allergens, such as dust mites, sweat, and skin cells, which can cause breathing difficulties, runny nose, sore throat, watery eyes, or skin irritation. It can also lead to bad odors. That’s why it’s important to regularly freshen and deodorize your mattress.

Here are some tips on how to freshen and deodorize your mattress:

  1. Vacuum the mattress: Use the upholstery attachment to vacuum the surface, sides, and even the areas beneath the seams of your mattress. Don’t forget to prop up the mattress and vacuum the other side as well. Before you vacuum, make sure to wash the upholstery attachment in warm water to remove any dust and germs sticking to it.
  2. Use natural deodorizers: Avoid using chemical sprays on your mattress, as they may irritate your allergies. Instead, try natural deodorizers like vinegar, baking soda, and cornstarch.

To use vinegar, mix equal parts water and distilled white vinegar in a spray bottle. Lightly spray the solution over your mattress and let it air dry completely. Then, prop the mattress against the wall and spray the other side. Finally, sprinkle some baking soda on the mattress to deodorize any lingering odors.

Baking soda is a natural odor neutralizer that can be used on its own or mixed with cornstarch. To use it, sprinkle baking soda over your mattress surface using a flour sifter and let it sit for at least 30 minutes, or up to 24 hours. Then, vacuum the bed using the upholstery attachment to remove the baking soda.

To use cornstarch, mix it with baking soda and scatter it over your mattress surface. Let the mixture sit on your bed for a day, then vacuum the bed to remove it.

  1. Air out the mattress: After deodorizing your mattress, make sure to air it out thoroughly by opening windows and using fans. Sunlight can also help to dry up the moisture from your bed and eliminate odors.
  2. Protect the mattress: To prevent the build-up of allergens and odors, use a mattress protector and wash your bedding regularly. You should also rotate and flip your mattress every few months to evenly distribute the wear and tear.

By following these simple steps, you can effectively freshen and deodorize your mattress, ensuring a clean and comfortable sleeping environment. Remember to do it regularly, at least once every six months, to keep allergens at bay and prolong the life of your mattress.
